Home for Memory

What We Keep Is the Memory It Carries

How many times do we move home in a lifetime? The home we grew up in, the first place we made our own, the home once shared with someone else—each holds its own stories, and each of us carries a different idea of what home means.
‍
Home is an intangible idea rooted in physical space. Whenever our lives change and we move on, that idea leaves one place and settles into another. Yet when a home is emptied or a building is demolished, it can be difficult to part with the doors, windows, furniture, and other familiar objects left behind. They carry memories that cannot simply be packed into a box and taken with us.
‍
The Home Project gives these memories a new place to reside. From homes and buildings about to disappear, we identify elements that hold traces of their time and history, preserve them, and transform them through artistic practice. Given a new form, they carry memories of the past into everyday life—and onward into an unknown future.
